Another word or two on abstinence

For those who believe that abstinence-only education can work, do they truly know what they support? Do they have any scope of what they are trying to do? They have taken a stance that goes against any current of history. Has there ever been a society in the history of mankind that was so absolutely sexless that people only copulated to procreate? This is what Bush, the Republicians, and the Christian Right seek to create: a sexless society. But it's impossible. History is the only guide one needs to tell this to us. And it's harmful to try to create something that will never exist in this case because it means that the powers that be are ignoring the problems caused by sexually uneducated people getting into the act: STDs, AIDS, unwanted pregnanices, rapes, etc. Abstinence-only education and the GOP/Christian Right's fruitless march towards a sexless society have only made these bigger problems.

Furthermore, parents have to burden some of the blame. How easy it is to forget what we felt when we were teenagers. It should be apparent now that when teenagers start thinking about sex, they'll most likely try to start having it. This means that they need to be taught about it for their own safety. I know it's easy for somebody in my childless position to stand on me soapbox and say this since I don't have a horny teenager to deal with, but they have to learn, right? Parenting is a tough job, and welcome to the tough part. Sheltering children does nothing to help them, they have to learn about the world - sex included. If you don't teach them about it, then who will?

A sexless society isn't possible. It never was, and it never will be. To think that a society of people will ever partake in sex solely for procreation and not for pleasure has to be one of the most moronic ideas humans have ever conceived. How do people come to the point where they believe this foolishness? How do you grow up and lose all your common sense to the point where you think you can stop teenagers from fucking? It's truly ridiculous.
