Another rightie Washington Post columnist beats the "Liberals hate freedom!" drum

Dear Charles Krauthammer, please shut the fuck up.

If you had said 20 years ago that Ukraine would today be on the threshold of joining a democratic Europe, you, too, would have been called a hopeless utopian. Yes, Iraq has no democratic tradition and deep ethnic divisions. But Ukrainian democracy is all of 13 years old, much of it dominated by a corrupt, authoritarian regime with close ties to an even more corrupt and authoritarian Russia. And with a civilizational split right down the middle, Ukraine has profound, and potentially catastrophic, divisions.

So let us all join hands in praise of the young people braving the cold in the streets of Kiev. But then tell me why there is such silence about the Iraqis, young and old, braving bullets and bombs, organizing electorate lists and negotiating coalitions even as we speak. Where is it written: Only in Ukraine?

Well, isn't this a brazen revision of history. Mr. Krauthammer would like us to believe that establishing a democracy in Iraq is akin to ordering a pizza from Papa John's. Why, look at that Eastern European nation, they established a democracy in 13 years! Iraq can do the same, and don't let anybody tell you anything different!

It would be nice if Mr. Krauthammer actually told the truth and did a fair, side-by-side comparisan Iraq and the Ukraine's histories. Maybe then he would notice that while one nation has had a unifying national identity since the early part of the 20th century, as proven by the fact that they were a sovereign nation for three years in the 1920s after the communists deposed of the Romanov's, the other nation was compromised of large populations from multiple nationalities, and their current national boundries were drawn after World War I and the final fall of the Ottoman Empire. And while the nation which held a population that had one unifying national identity saw its neighbors become democracies, the other was placed under further occupation by its cononial European rulers who did nothing to unify the people, and would not introduce them to the powerful ideas of democracy. And while one nation had the examples of their neighbors and how they formed their democracies to look upon and study as an example, the other saw the budding democracies of their neighbors crushed by their cononial rulers, which later led to those undemocratic governments being toppled by extremist religious dictators. And while one nation's people were finally ready for the installation of a democratic government, the other nation was far, far behind them because the example their neighbors gave them was to start a religious theocracy.

I'm so sick of this "liberals hate freedom because they don't support our actions in Iraq" meme that the Republicans are crowing about. Maybe if these assholes knew fucking anything about world history, they could see why we're apprehensive to their assertions that democracy can just be installed in a nation that knows nothing about the concept, and worse, is filled quarrelling fractions of different nationalities. This should be filled under Fucking DUH! as far as I'm concerned.
