Bennett didn't bet the "milk money", he bet his reputation. And lost.
Salon has an article today about Bill Bennett, the former Reagan administration flunky who has gambled away the money he made off his books about how Americans should adhere to Christian morals. Salon makes the case against this Christian warrior, stating the fact that while Bennett has never explicitly spoken out against gambling in one of his books, the members of the moral "majority" that he aligns himself with are very, very anti-gambling. And even if Bennett has never come out and said that gambling isn't amoral, he's still a hypocrite because he lied to his wife about losing $8 *MILLION* dollars in Atlantic City. A good Christian fundamentalist would never think about lying to his wife unless he was doing something he wasn't supposed to do, like having an affair or lose $8 million at the tables.
If you are of the belief that this is not news and that the "liberal media" reporting this story has an agenda against Republicans, I got three words for you: "fuck" and "you" and "shithead". Please tell me that you're not this delusional, please. How can ANYBODY, no matter how biased you are (and I'm not saying that I'm not biased), not stand back and take a look at the situation and see why it is a story: a public figure from the Christian right wing of the Republican Party, a former Reagan administration official who now makes his living off writing books and giving speeches telling everyone else how they should live upto the standards of Christian morals, was caught red handed in the act of being a hypocrite. He was caught gambling away $8 million, and he was also caught lying to his wife. These are FACTS of the story that cannot be disputed. So, please, tell me has the "liberal media" has an agenda and lambasting an "innocent" Bennett proves it. Innocent my ass.
The fact that Republicans have not come out against this guy should tell you a few things about the party. First off, they are hypocrites; do as I say, not as I do. Second, they have too much power, but they don't want you to think that they have too much power. They want you to believe the myth that is the liberal media without pointing out the hypocritical aspects of it, like the fact that MSNBC has shifted far to the right, Foxnews is run by former operatives of the Republican Party, the six corporations that own the majority of the mainstream media are run by conservatives, etc. Third, Republicans are brash, feel that can lie to us at anytime because the know as well as you and I do that the media is on THEIR side. The media does not question Bush. Hell, the full interview from Sen. Santorum was hardly printed, (in fact I would have provided a link to it, but the Washington Post took the story offline), and honestly, as reprehensible as his comments about homosexuals were, I'm more scared by the fact that Santorum advocates shoving religion down our throats and telling us that we shouldn't have a right to privacy. How come we didn't see, well, ANYBODY, come out and say that Santorum should resign because he is not doing the job that he was sworn into office to do: defend the Constitution. That man doesn't give a shit about the Constitution, he's in office to further his religious agenda, period. This goes against the Constitution and his oath of office to defend that document. I'd say those are reason grounds from him to be thrown out of office. And finally, Republicans do not think they can be voted out of office.
It's our job to prove that to be incorrect.
