Frist: It's genocide
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist visits refugee camps of Sudanese in Chad, and has this to say.
"What is going on there [in Darfur] is genocide. I disagree with the statement made by the EU [European Union] yesterday [Monday] saying this is not genocide. The international community must not turn its back on this crisis." [and]
"The US and UN have people on the ground who have interviewed the refugees and have reported these happenings. Again, for myself as someone who has been on the ground and informed of what is happening, there is a clear-cut goal of extermination of the civilians."
Whoa. Frist officially gets five Loaded Mouth "You're fucking cool!" points, something that Republicans hardly ever receive.
Yet, even with the influence of Frist, Bush still won't call it genocide. My Genocide Watch counter is now at 20 days...
Meanwhile, the Sudanese government continues to bomb Darfur residents out of their villages. But now there's a different threat - Locusts.
Darfur villagers nervously watching the skies for bombers might soon see another unwelcome sight — locusts. Pest control experts said millions of the insects might be headed toward the region, Reuters reports.
"Swarms could get into Sudan any day, but we of course don't know when," said Clive Elliott, senior officer in charge of the locust group at the Rome-based U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. Two major locust swarms have devastated areas of neighbouring Chad, devouring crops, vegetation and pastures.
This situation just gets worse with every passing day.
