First day of what?

Spring? Could have fooled me. It's whiter than a KKK rally outside my door.

They'll be some posts later tonight, though I have to read a book and study for a test this weekend, so things will be limited unless somebody can tell me what Dispatches is about well enough so I can write a book review and not look like I'm full of shit.

People around the world are protesting our invasion of Iraq. Indymedia usually has the best coverage of these events. The BBC has words and pictures.

Hey, where's bin Laden and al-Zawahiri? Talk about a non-story. If I have time I'll look into the origins of it and see who in the media fucked up.

Now... To the Batmobile!

Saturday is Cartoon Day!

As always, a few by Ted Rall.

Why are we killing reporters in Iraq?

Of course, they're not American reporters.

Arab journalists walked out of a Baghdad news conference given by Secretary of State Colin Powell Friday in protest at the lack of security and the killing of two Iraqi journalists by U.S. troops.

More information from the other side of the fence here. Even a member of the Iraqi Governing Council called this an act of "clear aggression."

Taxes will go up despite who is president

It's what happens when short-sighted, narrow-minded presidents hand out tax cuts to their rich friends. Now there's a mess to clean up.

But there's a new budget reality that even some conservative economists can't ignore. A massive and growing federal budget deficit now looks increasingly hard to tame without raising more government revenue. That's another word for tax hike.

Thanks to Bush's tax cuts shifting the tax base from the backs of the rich and more onto the backs of the poor, guess who'll pay for this?!

Proof that blogs are dangerous

Well, at least the Chinese government thinks so. Censorship in practice.

Scalia tells the constitution to go fuck itself

Hey, I'm just telling it like it is. "Disgrace" doesn't begin to describe this man. And if I did begin to describe this man, I betcha I'd use the f-word fucking 50 times with the mood I'm in, so I'm going to stop while I'm ahead.

Go take a look at this photograph, it's Scalia and The Big Dick walking off a government plane. This would be fine if Scalia wasn't deciding a case where Cheney is being sued. Even if we found the photos of Scalia going down on Cheney, he'd still insist "Phas tih'nt uh womfickt uhf untest!"

Loaded

(Not mouth) but Atrios' readers have given the Kerry campaign over $75,000 in the past 3 weeks. NPR should hire this guy for pledge week.

Extinctions are up

Way up. Unfortunately, it has yet to effect the Republican Party.

Another non-story

I'm not going to link to any of the stories which boost that bin Laden's right hand man may be cornered or may almost be captured. Hell, I refuse to waste my time reading any of them. Either you got him or you fucking don't, OK? And if you don't, it's not a fucking story.

What I found most striking about these new operations on the Pakistani/Afghanistan border is how well they have been advertised. You know, nothing helps our search for bin Laden like making sure that every media agency in the known universe tells him where we'll be searching for him, and at what time. I think the point of holding a search operation is that the subject of the search doesn't know when and where the operation takes place. Duh. Any 5 year old who's played "Manhunt" could tell you this.

Update: At 7:30 this morning, they (non) story hasn't changed. However, the Taliban (remember them?) says, "Bin Laden and al-Zawahiri safe in Afghanistan."

This county is so gay

I stole this image from the blog at Politics1.com. Since their blog doesn't have permalinks, I'm going to steal their whole entry before it goes off the page, because I think you should read it.

FROM THE SAME FOLKS WHO BROUGHT US THE INFAMOUS "MONKEY TRIAL" ... The folks on the Rhea County Commission in Tennessee have thought up a really ... umm ... unique way to block gay marriage from spreading into their community. Their solution: criminalize homosexuality so that they can ban homosexuals from even living in Rhea County. Commissioner J.C. Fugate proposed the resolution urging state lawmakers to introduce legislation amending Tennessee's criminal code so that Rhea County can charge homosexuals with "crimes against nature." Under Fugate's plan, gay persons could be both imprisoned for this criminal offense and barred from even living in the county itself because -- by their very nature -- homosexuals would all be deemed criminals. That, you see, would stop gay marriage from even reaching this area. "We need to keep them out of here ... I'd like to make [sure] that those kind of people cannot live in Rhea County or abide in Rhea County. If they're caught in Rhea County living together as such, they should be tried for crimes against nature," said Fugate. The resolution passed by an 8-0 vote. The commissioners later asked the County Attorney to "find the best way [now] to enact a local law banning homosexuals from living in Rhea County." Rhea County was the same jurisdiction that criminally prosecuted school teacher John Scopes in 1925 for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution -- an event the county celebrates each year with a festival.

Just think, people around the world can look at this and think to themselves, "God, do I hate those sibling-fucking Americans."

There's really no point to this post

I just like to show fucked up pictures.

Caption needed!

Al Jazeera provides this great photo of der monkey. Gimmie a caption for it.

(And not to ignore the linked article, "US casualties mount ahead of anniversary," you should give it a read.)

A little good news from a bad situation

The death toll from that car bomb in Baghdad is down to 6, which still isn't good since 1 is too much, but it's much better than 27.

...Other reports still still 27, some say 17, so I guess we'll know for sure later today. I'm hoping it's 6, though.

We'll need a tax credit for KY soon

Somewhere in California comes this non-photoshopped image of highway robbery.

Censorship from der monkey...?

Yesterday, I linked to a story from Foreign Aid Watch about lies which the Iraqi National Congress told us. Today, FAW has an update on how this story has been pulled from Google News. After the story was published and before Google News picked it up, FAW logs show that it got hits from .gov sites, including dc.gov. FAW received email confirmation from Google that the story was available on Google News, but it has been since been pulled. (I can't find it if I try searching for it.) So, adjust that tin foil hat... Is this government censorship? Read the story and you decide.

Shut the fuck up, Donny

Amuse yourself with The Big Lebowski Random Quote Generator. And if you haven't seen the movie, one question... Are you insane?

The economy's doing great!

Bank of America plans to axe 13,000 jobs when it merges with FleetBoston.

A Miserable Failure

I'd love to bury the Spain elections story since I'm quite sick of it, but everywhere I turn I see another article or column which rants about how the terrorists won, Spain is supporting the terrorists, etc. Like today, when I looked at the op/ed section of the Providence Journal and this column by Froma Harrop was staring me in the face. I hardly ever take the time to read her tripe, but knowing that she's generally middle of the road politically and not a Bush supporter, I was interested in what this somewhat-democrat had to say about Spain's elections. To my surprise, she had to audacity to invoke Orwell in defense of her arguments:

Having been elected under such lamentable circumstances, Socialist José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero should have made a short and strong statement that his government would go after the monsters. Instead, he immediately ticked off the al-Qaida wish list: Spain would distance itself from the United States. It would pull its troops out of Iraq, unless the United Nations took over command there. He denounced the war in Iraq as "unjust" and a "disaster."

The last remark swarmed with sick Orwellian logic. The argument can be made that Saddam was not the grave international threat that he was believed to be. One might say that Iraq was not our business. But no educated leader would imply that the Iraqi people were better off under that mass murderer. To say that the occupation "hasn't generated anything but more violence and hate," as Zapatero had done, reflected a willful ignorance. [emphasis mine]

It's funny that she should mention Orwell. Couldn't it be considered Orwellian to have our "elected" leaders lying to the populace with the sole purpose of launching a war? But I guess we're not supposed to question the Bush administration on Iraq now, are we? Everytime one of their reasons for going to war is proven wrong, Bush's defenders can just whip another one out. Saddam doesn't have connections to al-Qa'ida or 9/11? Well, he has weapons of mass destruction! Saddam doesn't have weapons of mass destruction? Well, he is a horrible dictator! We can't argue with that, now can we? Saddam was a mass murderer who subjected his people to horrors that I would never like to experience. With that said, Bush's brownshirts defenders then look at pacifists as if we're some group of looney's for questioning the Iraq war. This attitude has extended to their commentary on the socialist victory in Spain's elections. How dare Prime Minister-elect José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero call the Iraq war a disaster! How ignorant! Can't he see we freed the people of Iraq from the clutches of a dictator?!

These people, in their haste to defend the Bush administration's actions, are willfully ignorant one huge issue: The war in Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with the war or terror. Saddam never played a role in the mass murder of 3000 Americans on 9/11/01. The fall of Saddam obviously hasn't made the world a safer place if al-Qa'ida can slaughter 200 Spaniards on 3/11/04. Furthermore, after Bush gave the UN the finger before invading Iraq, thus shunning the rest of the world, his reasons for doing so were that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and harbored terrorists. Not liberating the Iraqi people. Before, during, and especially after the war, people like myself tried to tell as many people as possible that Saddam did not have connections to al-Qa'ida or WMDs, but Bush and his defenders labeled us as nutjobs. Even though we were right, that hasn't changed how closed minded they are. It has come to the point where no matter how wrong they have been for the past two years, they will still attempt to yell down people who criticize Bush's invasion of Iraq. But given the context that the Iraq war was supposed to be a plank in the larger agenda of the war on terror, and since it's been confirmed after the invasion that Saddam never had WMDs or connections to al-Qa'ida, how can this not be considered a disaster? How can it not be considered a disaster when you take an objective look at the situation? On top of tying up the majority of our military in this boondoogle, thus leaving us defensless for another attack, we have effectively neutralized our military in the war on terror. They aren't fighting terrorist organizations, save for the ones that have crossed the border into Iraq, they are simply fighting for Iraq to survive through the mess Bush has created out of it. In the meantime, al-Qa'ida has bombed Madrid, Riyadh, they may be involved in attacks on our soldiers in Iraq now that Saddam's out of the way and they can cross the border, and who knows what else they are planning. Iraq was supposed to be a battle in the war on terror, and given this context, it was a huge disaster. There's really no other way to argue it.

Personally, I'm sick to death of people trying to justify it. The only concession I can give is that yes, the people of Iraq are better off without Saddam. However, this wasn't the reason for going to war, and it can be said for other countries around the world that they would be better off if they weren't under the rule of a dictator. So why don't we send our troops to overthrow the governments in Zimbabwe or Uzbekistan? Their people would be better off without their current leaders, so come on, let's roll! Send in the Marines! If you think this argument sounds ridiculous, then you're correct; it's just as ridiculous to justify the war in Iraq by saying it was for the people there. Where Bush and his defenders will corner you with this argument, though, is by making you look insensitive if you try to argue against it. How can you argue against the betterment of a population? Don't you have a heart? Hey, I'd love to make sure that the world is better off, but where do we start? And how do we determine what to do? And is it wise to allocate our resources to this effort a couple years after we've been attacked, thousands of our citizens were murdered, and we're not hunting for the perpetrators of this crime? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought this was supposed to be a war on terrorism.

Given the facts, it's amazing that anybody can argue that the war in Iraq was a success. It was a complete and total failure as far as the overall war on terrorism goes, not to mention that Bush has no exit plan to speak of. While al-Qa'ida continues to stay intact and plot future attacks, receiving who knows what kind of support from powerful members of the Saudi royal family who just happen to be friends with the Bush family, we're tied down to nation building a firecracker. Bush's election year political aims to get out of Iraq this June are completely rushing the process, and Iraq could enter into a full blown civil war if we fuck this up. If that happens, we'll be stuck in the country for years when we should be focusing on actual terrorists.

Not like our media will question the Bush administration. Instead, when a foreign leader dares to question them on Iraq, the American Propaganda Machine goes nuts, trying to convince us that Spain was taken over by terrorists. They never question how al-Qa'ida still has the strength and organization to ignite 10 bombs and kill 200 people if the world is supposedly safer now that Saddam is in our custody. God, with the way the press has shit their pants you'd think Osama bin Laden just got elected. Zapatero has even said that he would keep their troops in Iraq as long as they are part of a UN effort, not US since Bush has done so much to bungle the Iraq war. In case you missed that, I'll repeat myself: Spain has offered to keep their troops in Iraq, but not in a way that suits Bush. Doesn't sound like there's much terrorist appeasement there, does it?

The press has sunk to new lows this week. They've told us everything but the facts. One article I saw on the frontpage a couple days ago even suggested that terrorists could try to influence the American elections, which was almost a blatant statement saying that terrorists support Kerry. Any questioning of American policy and the way we fight the war on terrorism is strictly verboten, tantamount to supporting al-Qa'ida. Meanwhile, Iraq is a disaster and the world is not safer from terrorism, but god forbid if you mention it. I wonder what Orwell would say about this.

Fair and Balanced

This site has John Kerry's campaign blog on the left, and Dubya's campaign blog on the right. Hear two sides of what our corporate masters want us to hear...

And I just have to comment on this logo:

What the fuck is up with this logo? Did Bush's deceased dog come up with the "B" and the graphic designer ran with it? Is it supposed to look badass, like graffiti, since blogs are so cutting edge and all the young people are reading them these days? What the fuck is up with this?

I can't believe I just read this

Wow.

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, encountering the other side of a tempestuous debate in the United States, sought to assure Indians on Tuesday that the Bush administration would not try to halt the outsourcing of high-technology jobs to their country.

Jesus Dubya, whose fucking side are you on? Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Indians growing their economy. They have 700 million more people than us and it's to be expected, I can't falut them for wanting these jobs. On the other hand, Bush also has an economy to worry about and jobs to create. But he just doesn't seem to care, does he?

The rift between Europe and the US

If you're looking to read a good, short foreign policy piece that will make you think, this is the article you're looking for. Spain was the first major surprise, but probably not the last. Not by a longshot.

The affinity between the US and western Europe was, not least, a product of the cold war. Once, after 9/11, the US decided to pursue a unilateralist policy in support of its own interests as the world's sole superpower, Europe found itself out in the cold. We are only at the beginning of this period, and many surprises lie in wait - Spain is but one example. British opinion has certainly shifted. It has moved away from the US, though not - except by default - towards Europe.

Mmmmm, sweet ass luvin'

You ever just wanna poke a donkey?

A frustrated Afghan soldier who could not afford to get married has been released without charge after being caught having sex with a donkey, police say.

Would you like some Chalabi with that?

Who tried telling the world that Saddam had connections with bin Laden? Ahmad Chalabi and his Iraqi National Congress.

Who tried telling the world that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction? Ahmad Chalabi and his Iraqi National Congress.

Who admitted to feed false information like this "to Arab and Western news media and to two officials in the offices of Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, the leading invasion advocates."? Ahmad Chalabi and his Iraqi National Congress.

Who's paying for these lies? If you're a tax paying American citizen, then you are!

And, if you need a reminder to know how far these lies went:

The Iraqi National Congress letter said it fed information to Arab and Western news media and to two officials in the offices of Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, the leading invasion advocates.

The articles made numerous assertions that so far have not been substantiated 11 months after Baghdad fell...

...According to the letter, publications in which the articles appeared included the New York Times, the Washington Post, Vanity Fair, the Atlantic Monthly, the Times of London, the Sunday Times of London, the Sunday Age of Melbourne, Australia, and two Knight Ridder newspapers, the Kansas City Star and the Philadelphia Daily News. The Associated Press and others news services also wrote stories.

We just paid millions to be lied to by Ahmad Chalabi, a man who, by the way, is a convicted felon in Jordan.

Happy days are here again!

For big oil, that is, because gas prices are set to fuck us in the ass this summer. (Not to be crass or anything, but why tiptoe around the tulips here?) The article says that supply and new environmental controls are the factors driving up gas prices, but I speculate that corporate profits are also playing a role. I think my reasoning for this speculation is sound, since ChevronTexaco's profits doubled last year, and ExxonMobile's profits were up 63%, both profit margins benefitting from rising gas prices. So why split hairs here? Gas prices are up because big oil companies, seemingly acting together as one entity, all raise gas prices at the same time. The only question here is why we haven't seen an antitrust lawsuit yet. (Of course, we all know the answer to that starts with a "W.")

It's been a long day

I'll try to give the blog some updates tonight before I goto work. I'm in my 21st waking away of a very long day, though, and running into much bad luck... Even the last story I tried researching was a bust, so you're left with this shitty IOU. Good night.

He hasn't had grades like this since Yale

Women's groups have a report card on Bush.

Feeling dirty?

Well, start.

The average worker's desk is contaminated with more germs than a toilet seat, according to a University of Arizona study.

Does this mean I can wipe my ass with my keyboard and not have to worry about it being dirtier than it already is now? Just asking.

Gitmo prisoners abused

Of course, this shouldn't come as a surprise. Nor should the denials from our government. But I thought this line of bull from Colin Powell was rich:

Mr Powell said it was "not in the American tradition to treat people in that manner" and the US had followed the Geneva Convention.

Let me make sure I have this straight: The US has continually denied that prisoners in Gitmo are prisoners of war under the rules of the Geneva Convention, yet we're supposed to believe that the detainees at Gitmo, most of whom aren't even allowed to see lawyers and access is so secretive that we don't know what's going on there because our government won't tell us, that they are being treated in accordance with the standards of the Geneva Convention. The loophole here, which Colin Blow will not mention, is that since the US refuses to recognize Gitmo detainees as POWs, they technically have no rights afforded to them by the Geneva Convention. Therefore, the US can follow any standards they damn well please. And they aren't telling us what goes on at Gitmo. Yet when some prisoners are released, there are automatically stories of abuse. Hmmmm... Who's done more to earn my trust here?

Get ready to rumble!

Here your battleground states, according to the Washington Post

American Propaganda

I only had a brief moment to look at yesterdays edition of my hometown paper, the Providence Journal, and I got to see this headline: "SPANISH GOVERNMENT FALLS." You know, like it was overtaken by a violent coup. Fucking ridiculous. If it wasn't for 3/11, Spain's elections wouldn't have even made it onto the frontpage, but since 3/11 the frontpages can't even admit that the elections were fair and democratic. Instead, they were melodramatic -- "SPANISH GOVERNMENT FALLS." What a load of crap. One can only wish that our papers will report on actual coups in the future, since they missed one in Florida that happened three and a half years ago.

Feeling paranoid?

You should be.

Well, tonight I actually have to pay attention to my homework...

...or fail. And you wouldn't want that, right? I believe you, dear reader, are looking out for me, so I give you free reign to bitchslap me if you see a post before 6am. Seriously, beat me like a rented mule if I even so much as breath on this addiction blog before then. (Not like any of you will be up before seven, lucky bastards.)

3/15/2004

Ha Ha Hah

Thank heavens the Socialists won in Spain, because this whole night I've been entertained by Republicans shitting their pants. The terrorists won! The terrorists won! Ahhhhh! Run for your lives!

Apparently, terrorists win when socialists are elected, but terrorists don't win after their bombings cause the passage of the USA PATRIOT Act that the government can use to restrict all of our constitutional rights. Remember the Republican message here: Peaceful socialists = TERRORISTS! Lack of civil rights = A-OK.

While we're on the topic of terrorism and how wrong some people are, where's all those weapons of mass destruction? And where's Saddam's connections to al-Qa'ida? Amazingly enough, people actually wonder how a government which supported the war in Iraq could lose an election.

Mexican workers dying in large numbers

Even more than Americans working the same jobs. This story may be decried by those with a hardline stance against illegal immigration, it's still dead people we're talking about. Last time I checked, any worker who dies because their employer did not uphold standards of safety has become a victim to a crime.

Some kind of shocking numbers

Violence against women in Jordan is measured:

The UN study found that 42% of Jordanian women suffer from physical violence and even higher numbers suffer from sexual and verbal abuse in the home.

Got AIDS? Go die.

Hey, that's what I get from der monkey and his corporate backers. Get a load of this shit:

A United Nations plan to provide three million HIV-infected patients in Africa with anti-retroviral drugs by 2005 is in danger of collapsing owing to lack of funds, UN and World Health Organisation officials said.

Some countries, particularly the United States, are balking at supporting the project, Aids workers say, partly because the plan intends to use a form of medicine called fixed-dose combination antiretroviral drugs whose use is opposed by large pharmaceutical companies.

You know, it just doesn't get more clear cut than that.

He reads?

The NY Times drops a bombshell on one assumption the left has about Bush:

To break it down further, the president is generally awake by 5 a.m., when he has coffee and reads the newspapers in bed with his wife.

He reads the newspapers?! Shit... I watched Bush's interview on Fox News and heard him say with my own ears that the only news he read was handpicked by his advisors. Could we be mistaken?! Could Bush have an independent mind? Stay tuned!

[Update: Thanks to Pandagon, you can read the transcript from Fox News of Bush's interview with Hume.]

Headlines that make you say, "Damn."

Ashcroft Leaves Hospital... Can't he stay?

Gee, I guess it was Bush's fault after all

Or so says the Spanish electorate, giving the ruling conservatives the finger and bringing the socialists into power. The short story made even shorter: Spain's government backed US war in Iraq + al-Qa'ida striking western targets = Bombings in Madrid. The Spanish people, 90% of whom were against their government's support of war in Iraq, got the message.

The jab I take at Bush is very much on purpose, since some conservatives have been saying that the left is a bunch of nutjobs if we seek to implicate that Bush has to bare any responsibility for the Madrid bombings. Tell it to the Spanish voters, folks... Try selling your snake oil to the Spanish voters and tell me what they say. They obviously got the hint.

You know, one shouldn't ignore their school work for a week...

Oops. So I'll be posting tonight, at sometime, but the blog may not seem as updated as usual since I have other matters to attend too. I probably should take another dayoff, but I don't like leaving the blog without an update for two days. So here I am.

3/14/2004

Late

I'm not too happy right now. Plus I have to change my oil, do some homework, find time to eat and sleep before work... Hell, even this post saying I'll be late with other posts is late, so don't expect too much from the wonderboy today.
